Shaping feathers

Anyone used one of the feather choppers as sold by 3 Rivers?Does it work well? Any quirks or tricks needed to get one to work? How does it compare to the more expensive feather burners? ThanksTom I.

A ferather chopper is very very easy to use. The only disadvantage is that you can only cut that basic size and shape. You can adjust it a little to cut higher or lower which affects length a little....

I use sissors exclusively...never had a problem... 'cheap' also.....one thing, fletch the arrow first with the lengths already cut and then trim the shape you want..Gary

I have both and have used both. I like both but after using the burner I need to take a bath and the wife does not like the smell or the smoke from the burner also the arrows will smell for some time...

I like using a curved knife heated over a flame. You get the nice smell, and you can make perfect curves everytime.

I have both also and like the choppers better than the burner (the smell )ever turn your arrows into tiki torches with the burner adn the glue

I have always disliked the smell, and use some real sharp scissors and cut templates for the feathers made usually from plastic laminated paper, thin cardboard etc..Many shapes, takes seconds, you can...

Could someone post an explanation of how to trim and shape with scissors and tape....? Maybe a tutorial with pictures? I'd like to understand how it's done. Also, why would one want to singe the edges...

You just stick the masking tape on one side of the feather, draw/trace your shape and cut. The only major thing you have to remember is when removing the tape go with the barbs, front to back,...

If you use the masking tape and scissors method, make sure it is a low tack tape and apply it to the smooth (top) side of the fletch.Rod.
